Chambers Bay golf course tree vandalized but why?
Of all the things to vandalize in Washington - why choose the lone Douglas fir at Chambers Bay golf course?
The course was
otherwise having a good year. In February, the U.S. Golf Association said Chambers Bay would host the 2015 U.S. Open championship and the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2010.
Throughout 2007, it won awards from Golf Inc., Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine, Golf Magazine and Golf Week (according to the Chambers Bay Web site).
Its attention to environmental protection had been even been recognized by Audubon International (more on that here).
Then on April 29, disaster stuck when the symbol of the golf course - an iconic Douglas fir - was attacked overnight. Somebody tried to cut it down with an axe.
Um. I’ve got one question - why?
What point exactly is the nameless chopper trying to make? Do you think this person is an activist or a drunken teenager? If you think it’s an activist, please enlighten me as to what exactly the point of this would be, other than the obvious cut- down-the-tree-to-spite-the-big-golf-course move.
If it is an activist, what would have been a better way to prove a point?
The fir has since undergone tree surgery; a tree doctor put metal bracing around it to structurally stabilize the wound area. The trees’ roots will also be saturated with compost to make sure it gets the moisture and nutrients it needs.
And if you happen to know why the chopper did this there is a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the chopper’s arrest. Call (253) 591-5959 with information.

Hey! Thanks for all the great info. I was browsing through a bunch of green websites and blogs and I came across yours and found it very interesting. There are a bunch of others I like too, like the daily green, ecorazzi and earthlab.com. I especially like EarthLab.com’s carbon calculator (http://www.earthlab.com/signupprofile/). I find it really easy to use (it doesn’t make me feel guilty after I take it). Are there any others you would recommend? Can you drop me a link to your favorites (let me know if they are the same as mine).
