Forum Tuesday on sustainable design in Denmark, Northwest

For anyone who looks to Denmark as a beacon of shining light in green and efficient design, tomorrow is there an event for you!

The University of Washington is hosting a free talk on sustainable design in the Pacific Northwest and in Denmark. Speakers are Louise Grassov of Gehl Architects in Copenhagen, Jim Huffman of Busby Perkings + Will, and Roger Geller of the city of Portland’s Office of Transportation. Peter Steinbrueck of Urban Strategies will moderate. The talk is called “Urban Design for Walkable, Bikable Cities.”

This lecture series, called Global Green, is presented by the Green Futures Research and Design Lab. I’ve been to two of them so far and I highly recommend them. For more information, visit http://greenfutures.washington.edu/events.php.

It is a bit sad that Denmark is looked at as a beacon of environmental virtue. Denmark may be doing some good environmental things, but they are also doing alot of things wrong. Recycling in Denmark is more like “let’s just burn it!”. The number of recycling facilities in Denmark are laughable! Most of the waste in Denmark is burned in large ovens. Maybe that is the most cost effective way of disposing of the waste, but it creats a burden on renewable resources.

Whenever I address issues of reduction or reusing of material to companies it is shrugged off and they say it is more cost effective just to dump and burn.

I wont even get into the mentality on litter. “Littering is good, because it gives the street cleaner a job!” OMG!

No, Denmark has a long way to go and should not be put on a pedestal yet! Changes are in order - maybe the upcoming summit may shed some more light.

Hey, we are getting electric cars and charging stations within the next year, so that is good. If they would just reduce the taxes so people could afford to buy them.
