Hello lovely readers! I will be at the USGBC's GreenBuild Conference in Chicago this week and will be right back here throughout, updating you on all the sustainable happenings of the event!
However, one can only blog so much. If you want more news and timeline tidbits, follow me on Twitter. My handle is @KatieZemtseff.
I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Hope you are too. Starting Wednesday, check back often!

I’m there now.
Painful exchange in a class today: several owners/designers were complaining that their suburban projects will lose LEED points just because they don’t have good transit options. “I think it’s because the urban chapters are too powerful” Um, no. It’s because your way of life is paving over our countrysides, using massive amounts of resources, and burning up all of our fossil fuels. Suburban buildings are in no way green buildings.

Ouch. Why did they invite Colin Powell? His speech was clearly meant for a leadership conference, not a green building conference. Then ending with a speech about how we need all fuel sources including coal – I’m surprised I didn’t hear any booing (though I guess it would take serious guts to boo someone like Colin Powell).

Ouch, Matt! I just had posted an entry about how I’m hearing people are generally having a positive time here and how people seem to be more informed generally. Seems like that might not be playing out in your sessions, judging by that top comment! … will be interested to hear your comments at the end of the conference.
Yeah, I know. Colin Powell’s speech wasn’t really tailored to green building at all. But I find GreenBuild keynote talks rarely are. And I thought he had some interesting things to say about our society, and general leadership. The terrorism stuff…. I could have done without.
