As a long time supporter and volunteer at Seattle Children’s Hospital it was wonderful to see you highlight the recent article in the NY Times. However, your lead in suggested that this methodology is merely designed to create cost savings. In truth, this approach was begun years ago as a method of improving quality and creating more value for our “customers” – namely our patients and their families. The most important purpose of this approach is the improvement in the care and safety of the patient. In the process the additional benefits are cost savings and a better work experience. Seattle Children’s Hospital has a bold vision to provide the very best care possible. This method engages our employees to constantly seek better ways of doing things for our patients. Much of the savings that result from our improved efficiency gets poured into research. Your readers would benefit from knowing more about the impact this is having on our community and the world.
