Kudos to Seattle’s ASLA winners!

Two Seattle firms just won awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects!

ASLA announced its 2008 professional awards today.

Gustafson Guthrie Nichol in Chicago

Seattle’s Gustafson Guthrie Nichol won the General Design Award of Excellence, the category’s “best in show,” for its work on the Lurie Garden at Chicago’s Millennium Park.

Seattle’s Paul Broadhurst & Associates was also honored for design of a private garden for a homeowner on San Juan Island.

Jurors commented that Gustafson Guthrie Nichol created an “oasis in the city” with the 3-acre public botanical garden.

“The plant palette is very rich and engaging,” read the juror comments posted on ASLA’s Web site. “It has raised the bar and is far and away the most outstanding example of work submitted to the awards program this year.”

Shawna Gamache

Gamache is a sixth-generation Seattleite but has lived in other great cities like Chicago, Portland, Washington, D.C. and St. Petersburg, Russia, so she's got some ideas on what makes our SeattleScape unique.

Patrick Doherty is economic development director for the city of Federal Way. He previously worked for the city of Seattle in planning and development, including managing the Design Review Program from 1994 to 2001. Patrick chaired the Queen Anne/Magnolia/South Lake Union Design Review Board from 2006 to 2008. He also worked as historic preservation officer for the city of Council Bluffs, Iowa and as a survey researcher for HUD in rural Texas. He lives on Queen Anne Hill, enjoys exploring the city and the greater Pacific Northwest, photography, foreign languages and as much national and international travel as he can find time for.

Matt Hays has loved Seattle since birth. He lives in Belltown, walks nearly everywhere, and recently rediscovered bicycling. Matt is slightly obsessed with issues like pedestrian safety, parks and vibrant neighborhoods. He's read every DJC since high school. Since 1996 Matt has been the proposal writer at Lease Crutcher Lewis.

Mark Hinshaw is the director of urban design for LMN Architects. He has served as president of the Washington chapter of the American Planning Association and as president of the Seattle Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. From 1982-1990, he was principal urban designer for the city of Bellevue, helping guide its transformation from a nondescript collection of strip centers to a mixed use, transit-oriented urban center. His second book, "True Urbanism: Living In and Near the Center," was recently released.

Rico Quirindongo is a project manager and architect at DKA, as well as a founding member of the Northwest chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects. He has been with the firm since 1996 and focuses on community-based design projects, most recently the Northwest African American Museum.

Ellen Southard leads the Northwest office of Belt Collins offering civil engineering, planning, landscape architecture, environmental engineering and cultural resource consulting. She has 18 years of experience and a background in history and education. She assists in community planning specific to historic resources, community education and heritage planning. She recently completed an architectural inventory of Boise's historic Harris Ranch, a 1,700 acre site that includes Shoshone and Bannock burial grounds and the remaining structures of Idaho's early Barber Town Mill.

Irene Wall is a north Seattle native. She is the president of the Phinney Ridge Community Council and the Chair of the City Neighborhood Council's Neighborhood Planning Committee. During the day she works in professional services marketing for Tetra Tech Infrastructure Group, a national engineering and architecture firm. After (long) hours, she's a citizen crusader to protect views, open space, and the good life in Seattle.
