Littlefield Celtic Center is a new addition to the Celtic Arts Foundation's office at 1124 Cleveland Ave. in Mount Vernon.

The foundation purchased and converted a craftsman-style residential building. The 3,000-square-foot space was designed to complement the original building and the neighborhood.

The center has a commercial kitchen, restrooms and storage, along with a community gathering space for music, lectures and food.

Acoustics were designed to minimizing the impact of concerts outside the center. Attention was also paid to energy efficiency, with above-code insulation and high-performance windows. Sustainable materials were used throughout, with an eye towards durability, ease of maintenance and functionality.

The project received a merit award from the Northwest Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
