Orcas Island Public Library expansion

Photos from HKP Architects [enlarge]

Orcas Island Public Library, at 500 Rose St. in Eastsound, has opened a 6,000-square-foot expansion. Construction cost $3.17 million.

The project doubled the size of the library to more than 12,800 square feet. The old building was designed by the late Henry Klein, founder of HKP Architects, and completed in 1992.

HKP designed the expansion, with a new reading room, computer area, group space, children’s room and young adult room.

It was designed to accommodate both group activities as well as people who want quiet spaces for reading and work. The circulation desk was moved to a central location, with views of the old and new reading rooms. Computer stations were relocated to a larger area.

A Friends of the Library display in the lobby features the group’s books and merchandise.
