DESIGN PROFILE: BRIDGE CONNECTS PEDESTRIANS WITH DESERT VIEWS

Seattle artist Vicki Scuri developed the concept for the Dreamy Draw Pedestrian Bridge, near Phoenix, which was completed last year.

Also called the Paradise Valley Gateway, the project can be traced to land use planning of the late 1970s. It crosses the new Squaw Peak freeway, which is the main commuter route for Paradise Valley residents who work in downtown Phoenix.

"The Dreamy Draw Pedestrian Bridge is designed to connect people with place, providing access, landmark and meeting place," said Scuri. "It is designed to enhance the daily experience of driving, seeing and recreating.

"Views shift dramatically with location and movement. On the span, light patterned by geometric screening and framing creates a shadow garden -- at 'full bloom' in the afternoon."
