SEATTLE -- Eighteen percent more riders rode ST Express buses and Sounder commuter trains during the second quarter, according to Sound Transit.
Average weekday Sounder boardings grew more than 17 percent from the second quarter of 2002, boosted in part by the addition of a third rush hour train. Three trains run northbound from Tacoma in the mornings and southbound from Seattle in the evenings.
ST Express boardings jumped more than 18 percent, boosted in part by the addition of two new routes. Average ridership on established routes increased 8 percent.
Ridership is projected to keep growing when Tacoma Link light rail opens Friday. Sound Transit is working to start Sounder service between Seattle and Everett by year's end. Agency officials say ST Express bus service will improve with the opening of new park-and-ride facilities and three direct access ramps linking buses with express lanes on interstates 5 and 405.
