Design Perspectives: Will BRT become a catalyst for change?

Affluent Curitiba, Brazil, is a magnet for jobs and investment, yet it has one of the lowest rates of air pollution in the country. Per-household transportation costs have fallen substantially compared to other cities since the 1980s, and those households save an estimated seven million gallons of fuel annually by using transit.

Seoul, Korea, took out what was considered a vital traffic artery carrying 168,000 cars per day, and created a destination park along the river beneath. There were fears of gridlock, but the car trips were quickly absorbed by transit before the project was complete in 2005.
