Chihuly exhibit to break ground

SEATTLE — Dale Chihuly’s Garden and Glass exhibition will break ground tomorrow near the Space Needle.

Officials say it will be the most comprehensive collection of Chihuly’s art anywhere in the world.

Two focal points of the project will be a “glass house” in northwest corner of the space and a converted warehouse that will contain several galleries and a cafe. A key element in the garden portion will be a big glass sun.

The exhibit is expected to be finished in spring of 2012.

The ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on the west side of the Needle, where the Fun Forest once operated. Dale and his wife, Leslie, will symbolically break ground on the site and heavy equipment will scoop up the first of the 50-year-old asphalt field.
