WSDOT: tunneling won't cause viaduct to close

An official from the Washington State Department of Transportation yesterday said tunneling operations along the waterfront pose no threat to the operation or safety of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. One section of the viaduct near Yesler Way has sunk nearly a half-inch since the project began.

Todd Trepanier, administrator of the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement program, said the settlement is within safety limits and was anticipated during construction.
