A Seattle-based firm called dark|light design won two national awards for lighting in Newcastle Public Library at 12901 Newcastle Way.

The firm won a 2013 GE Edison Award for Environmental Design and an award of merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Synergy Construction completed the 11,000-square-foot library in 2013.

Mithun designed the structure, which has a main reading room, children's section, multipurpose room, study rooms and office space.

The library is transparent and open. Colored translucent seat blocks near the entry are illuminated with a grid of LED modules that can be seen from the street.

Dark|light design said the interior presented some challenges because of a high ceiling, a user group with diverse visual requirements and lots of natural light that changes throughout the day.

The building has high-efficiency lighting fixtures, including LED lighting for the library shelves. Lighting fixtures were kept simple to let the architecture stand out.

Dark|light design was founded in 2008.
