Seattle graphic design firm Studio SC said it won a 2014 award from Communication Arts for wayfinding and graphics at Seattle Children's.
The firm said it was a challenge to unify old and new parts of the hospital, so it designed floor-to-ceiling murals showing landscapes and animals for the entrance to each hospital zone. Elevators are named after animals.
A different color palette is used in each zone for directories and directional signs, and there are large illuminated disks at the entries.
Studio SC said the program creates an emotional connection with the hospital and offers a distraction for kids.
The awards are sponsored by Communication Arts magazine. Studio SC said 152 of the 3,632 entries were recognized.
