McVey Oakley designs Smoke + Cedar

Stenciled profiles of an elk above the booths is a nod to the Tacoma Elks, which owns the events center.

Smoke + Cedar is a new restaurant in the Allenmore Golf & Events Center at 2125 S. Cedar St. in Tacoma.

Seattle-based McVey Oakley Design Studio designed the interior. MC Construction Consultants was the contractor and Specialty Wood Manufacturing did the millwork.

George Oakley said his firm worked with chef/owner Gordon Naccarato and his business partner, Joe Hardwick, to create an updated Northwest lodge look.

It is a 6,100-square-foot, 180-seat restaurant with space for 80 people on the outdoor deck.

One challenge was designing an environment that works for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The breakfast atmosphere needed to be light and cheery, but the space needed a sense of drama for dinner. Lighting and color choices helped make the transition.

Carpet design was influenced by Native American blankets and modern rugs, and reinforces the Northwest lodge theme.

The live-edge bar came from a Douglas fir in Port Orchard.

Side x Side Creative worked with Naccarato and artist Chuck Knigge to draw a mascot for Smoke + Cedar: an elk smoking a pipe. The mascot is a nod to the Tacoma Elks, which owns the events center.
