Archaeologists dig in Bertha rescue pit

SEATTLE — Archaeologists began fieldwork Tuesday at the spot where Seattle Tunnel Partners was digging a rescue pit to reach Bertha, the stalled tunnel boring machine.

Last week STP workers found a deposit containing shells that could indicate the presence of cultural materials. WSDOT stopped work on the pit after the deposit was found.
