Tribal art sought for waterfront

Seattle is seeking proposals until Jan. 13 for a tribal art project that will be part of the Waterfront Seattle redevelopment. The Alaskan Way Viaduct will be replaced with more than 20 acres of public space, streets, parks and structures. This image shows views from new walkways along the water.

The city said the tribal art project will recognize the native people of this region, and reflect the Coast Salish tribes' historic connection to this area. Members of local tribes will serve on the selection panel.

The selected artist will receive $25,000 for initial design and concept work, and $225,000 for fabrication and installation. The piece will be installed after 2016.

Artists in Washington and British Columbia may apply at http://tiny.cc/05ewnx/. An informational workshop will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at City Hall.

Four artists are already under contract to create art for the waterfront, with contracts that total $1.73 million.

The art is funded by Seattle Department of Transportation 1% for Art.
