More studies before Bertha restarts?

SEATTLE — An independent review of the Alaskan Way Viaduct paid for by the Seattle Department of Transportation predicts additional ground settlement when tunneling resumes.

The CH2M Hill report calls for additional analysis from the Washington State Department of Transportation before the broken machine called Bertha restarts tunneling this summer.

Crews from Seattle Tunnel Partners have pulled defective parts out of a 120-foot-deep rescue pit along the Seattle waterfront and are fixing them under a giant canopy.

The review supports WSDOT's decision to keep the viaduct open, and said that the aging structure is safe.
