Snohomish PUD to start hydro projects

EVERETT (AP) — Federal energy regulators have approved two small hydroelectric projects proposed for the Snoqualmie Valley in east King County.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports (http://is.gd/M9kk1o) that the Snohomish County Public Utility District may begin work later this summer with major construction next year.

The projects on Calligan Creek and Hancock Creek would each generate about 6 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power about 10,000 homes.

They're known as run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects in which water is diverted through a pipe to generating turbines and then returned to the stream.

Both creeks flow into the North Fork of the Snoqualmie River near Interstate 90 in east King County.

Critics have raised concerns, saying the amount of energy generated is not the worth environment impacts.
