MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A state advisory council is looking to expand the state's network of non-motorized trails for use by hikers, bikers and horseback riders.
The Mail Tribune reports (http://is.gd/cTdrSU ) that the Oregon Recreation Trails Advisory Council is taking applications through Nov. 30 for those interested in getting a trail designated either as a regional or scenic trail.
State trails coordinator for the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department, Rocky Houston, says regional trails must be at least 5 miles in length and are usually in urban areas that connect places such as parks.
Houston says scenic trails are shorter, single routes that provide access to appealing landscapes. The only scenic trail is the recently dedicated Sterling Mine Ditch Trail in the Applegate Valley.
