Cutler Anderson Architects of Bainbridge Island won a 2016 AIA Housing Award for this house in Newberg, Oregon.
The 1,440-square-foot Newberg Residence is one of five projects that won in the category of one- and two-family custom residences.
It was completed in 2013 on a site near the owner's vineyard.
The house has one bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms, as well as a 550-square-foot guest house with two bedrooms and one bath.
The architect said the structure bridges over the north end of a pond so the owners can observe wildlife. Parking is about 150 feet away. Visitors walk through the forest to a bridge that leads to the main entry.
Cutler Anderson said the house has south-facing windows, exposed wood, steel beams and radiantly heated floors. Vertical-lift windows in the living/dining area open onto the swimming platform above the pond.
The jury said the “elegant design demonstrates the joy of living with nature (without) requiring a grand vista or dramatic landscape.”
Here's the rest of the project team: R&H Construction, contractor; Madden & Baughman Engineering, structural engineer; and Place Studio, landscape architect.
