Architect, the journal of the American Institute of Architects, ranked Portland-based ZGF Architects this year's top U.S. design firm, and the No. 1 firm for sustainability.

Architect said ZGF earned the top spots because of its healthy financials (it posted a 17 percent increase in net revenue in 2015) and its relentless push for higher building performance.

The practice designs super-efficient buildings, Architect said, that don't skimp on aesthetics. It noted that ZGF's design for a new cancer center for the University of Arizona in Phoenix echoes its desert surroundings, with walls clad in coppery metal sunscreens. The screens keep the 220,000-square-foot center cooler by deflecting sunlight while maximizing views.

The journal said ZGF provides a level of innovation so pioneering that it exceeds current rating systems. ZGF designed a new office for the Rocky Mountain Institute that has no central heating and is expected to be net-energy-positive.

Seattle firms Mithun, NBBJ, LMN Architects, The Miller Hull Partnership and Weber Thompson are also on the list of top 50 design firms, as is Hacker of Portland.

Besides sustainability, Architect also ranks firms for business and design. Go to http://tiny.cc/69ooey for the lists.
