An orca will ‘swim' through new building

Neal Robinson of RK Enterprises has started construction on a 14,000-square-foot brick building in Bellingham at 12th Street and Mill Avenue, south of the Fairhaven Library.

The two-story Orca Building will have retail and restaurant space on the ground floor, and office space above. A metal orca whale sculpture penetrates the top of the building on one side and chases a school of salmon.

The complex will include a public plaza that will be a gateway for the Fairhaven neighborhood.

A news release from Christensen Design Management says the project should be finished next spring.

Bellingham-based Christensen is the project architect. Here is the rest of the team: Robinson Hardwood & Homes, general contractor; Jones Engineering, structural engineer; and Bennett Engineering, civil. No MEP engineer has been picked, and an artist has not been selected for the sculpture.

David Moody of Fairhaven Realty is in charge of leasing.

RK Enterprises is seeking city approval for a three-story, 30-unit apartment addition behind the Orca Building, with an underground parking garage.
