This courtyard at Outside In has a garden, patio, artwork and a mural.

A center for homeless youth in Portland designed by Clark/Kjos Architects is featured in “By the People,” an exhibition at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York that runs until Feb. 26.

In a press release, CKA of Portland said it designed additions to the 10-year-old Outside In complex that support the mission of creating a facility that helps homeless and disenfranchised youth become independent.

The 45,125-square-foot building offers services such as housing, education, employment, counseling, healthy meals, recreation, art and safety.

The 25-person Clark/Kjos Architects focuses on health and health care projects.

Youth and staff from Outside In were included in the design process, guided and interpreted by the firm's designers.

Expressive and loosely attached building elements were used in the center, along with artworks, to reflect the ‘unfinished' quality of the youth who are served there.

This is one of 60 projects in the exhibition, which is dedicated to socially responsible design. Projects include graphic design, tools, website design, books, buildings, gardens, bikes and posters.
