Seattle Design Commission has named the winners of its biennial Design Excellence Awards, which recognize projects that improve the city and the public realm.

Here are the winners:

• Lower Mapes Creek restoration: A joint project by Seattle Public Utilities and Seattle Parks and Recreation at Beer Sheva Park in Rainier Beach. The design team included MIG|SvR and HBB Landscape Architecture, with artists John Grade and Yegizaw Michael. The project daylighted a culvert. Also, part of another culvert under 52nd Avenue South was upgraded. That upgrade allowed for expansion of the bike and pedestrian facility between Rainier and South Henderson.

The artist is Rob Ley, Urbana Studio.

• University of Washington Light Rail Station: Designed for Sound Transit by Northlink Transit Partners, McMillen Jacobs Associates, HNTB, Aecom, LMN Architects, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Swift Co., Grijalva Engineering, Moniz Art & Architecture, Dr G Sauer Corp., Lerch Bates, The Greenbusch Group, Light Wire, TrueNorth, LTK Engineering Services, START and Hoffman Construction Co. The artist is Leo Saul Berk.

• Bike Master Plan: Developed by Seattle Department of Transportation. The consultants were Alta Planning + Design, MIG|SvR, Nelson Nygaard and PRR. The contributors were Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, Cascade Bicycle Club and Seattle Bike Blog.

• Honorable mention for Leaves of Remembrance: The project was designed for the Women's Housing, Equality and Enhancement League, and the Homeless Remembrance Project. Leaves are embedded in pavement around Seattle to commemorate homeless people who have died. The project team was Carol Cameron, Jan Gleason, Dakota Keene, Karen Kiest, Kim Lokan, Mark Millett and Clark Wiegman.
