The city will hold an open house Oct. 3 about plans to make the Pike-Pine retail corridor more inviting to pedestrians between Pike Place Market and Capitol Hill.

The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Washington State Convention Center, 705 Pike St.

Seattle's Office of the Waterfront and the Downtown Seattle Association are leading design for the project, which they call “Pike Pine Renaissance: Act One.”

The concept design for improvements to Pike and Pine between First and Melrose is about 10 percent done. People can offer feedback at the open house, meet the project team and learn about related projects that will affect the area.

ZGF Architects is the project lead. The team also includes Toole Design Group, dark|light design, Project for Public Spaces and EnviroIssues.

This rendering shows streetscape improvements for Pike Street near Second Avenue. The city said elements could include improving sidewalk paving, crosswalks, lighting and street trees, as well as other changes that help create comfortable places to walk, gather and linger.

Downtown Seattle Association says Pike and Pine are great for shopping and strolling, but there are not many places to sit and gather other than Westlake Park.

The city intends to fund the $20 million Act One project through a local improvement district that will assess property owners to help pay for redeveloping the central waterfront.

Construction on Act One could begin in 2019.
