Laura Bartunek, an associate at Olson Kundig, won the AIA Seattle 2018 Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship. Her proposal is called “Because it Rains,” and will explore rain and design.
Bartunek will travel to Florida, Iceland, New Orleans, London, North Bend, Venice and New Mexico to document projects inspired by water. She will speak with meteorologists and cultural historians about rain, and use illustrations and stories to challenge how we think about weather.
This spring, Bartunek will co-teach the studio Design Dialogues at the University of Washington with Olson Kundig principals Edward Lalonde and Mark Olthoff, and UW associate professor and chair Brian McLaren.
The goal of the $5,000 scholarship is to expand opportunities for young professionals, encourage cross-cultural dialogue and share knowledge around the globe. It is funded by Seattle-area AIA fellows and members.
