Preservation: time is on our side

"Taking America's Past Into the Future" is the title of Preservation Week, May 14-20. For 29 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has called attention during this week to the preservation of historic buildings and places, and to the threat of losing many more.

Seattle, in particular, owes a lot to the spirit of the nationwide preservation movement and to local heroes as well. We've come a long way since 1971. Pioneer Square got the most attention at first. From successes there, the movement went on to win enormous benefits for the city, snatching precious pieces of our identity and heritage from the jaws of decay, urban renewal and short-sighted development.
