Design Perspectives: At age 92, Phil Thiel still on quest for better public spaces

By CLAIR ENLOW

This image shows Phil Thiel’s vision for an urban square over the future U District station. It extends the base of UW Tower, crossing the street and serving as public open space. In the foreground is an open walkway to University Way and the University Bookstore, part of a pedestrian network that the neighborhood can build around. At right, over the station entrance, is an art wall.

“It will be on the test.”
