SEATTLE -- The Metropolitan King County Council adopted an agreement yesterday that will make it responsible for running Sound Transit's Central Link light-rail line.
The agreement stems from an earlier decision that allowed both light rail and buses in Seattle's downtown transit tunnel. At the time, King County and Sound Transit agreed they would discuss which agency would be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the light-rail line.
Sound Transit will still be responsible for policy decisions affecting the light-rail line. Metro will create a separate rail division to run light rail, and will be paid to operate and maintain the system. It will also be responsible for staffing and training its support services.
The agreement runs 11 years and includes the first five years of operation of the light-rail system, which is slated to begin service in 2009.
