    Networking is a freighted word that people often associate with aggressive self-promotion or calling up long-lost bosses and colleagues to beg for help on a job hunt.

    Kendra Fuller, an associate principal at Sparling, a Seattle-based engineering firm, said she has had bad experiences with networking in the past. Just the word, she said, brings to mind “What can get I out of someone?”
