After fire, what's next for Springfield mill?

  • Swanson Group has completed a long cleanup and will decide by January whether to rebuild or buy another mill outside Lane County.

    SISTERS, Ore. — The owner of the plywood mill that burned to the ground in July has finished the extensive site cleanup, but hasn't decided on the next steps — including whether it will rebuild in Springfield.

    Swanson Group Inc. would like to rebuild on the property on South F Street, said Chuck Wert, the Glendale-based company's executive vice president, but it also is exploring buying an existing mill. The mills that company officials have looked at are primarily outside of Lane County, he said.
