BURIEN — Danny House, owner of a gift basket company called Dan the Sausageman, has been named the Small Business Administration's 2018 Washington State Small Business Person of the Year.
He turned a one-person business into a national retailer through online sales.
In 2017 online sales propelled House to a 6,000 percent increase in revenue and enabled him to employ nine people at peak demand.
House first started selling jerky and sausage door-to-door in the late 1980s after returning to Washington from Germany, where he had played semi-professional soccer.
His online success allowed him to purchase a building at 901-907 S.W. 152nd St. in Old Burien, which he plans to renovate and use as a distribution center and small retail shop.
House secured a $750,000 loan from SBA to buy the building with the help of the Washington Small Business Development Center.
