Bored tunnel design costs up 43 percent

SEATTLE — The projected cost of doing the preliminary and final design for the proposed bored tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct has increased by 43 percent to $169 million, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

WSDOT updated its cost figures for the project this week, as required by state lawmakers. The overall estimated cost of the tunnel is now $1.96 billion, compared to $1.9 billion a year ago.
