Location: Seattle

Contractor: Expert Drywall

Architect: ZGF

Team: Drywall Distributors, Cemco Steel Framing & Lath, GP Gypsum, USG

Providence’s $500 million Cymbaluk Medical Tower has 12 floors containing 680,000 square feet of space. It has 240 beds and space for imaging, surgery, critical care, medical telemetry, cardiac telemetry, acute inpatient care and emergency services.

Expert Drywall engineered and installed 1.5 million square feet of exterior and interior steel-stud framing assemblies, along with 3 million square feet of drywall. It also installed 100,000 square feet of exterior sheathing and weather-air barriers, building insulation, firestopping, lead-lined drywall and hollow metal frames.

Expert Drywall designed seismic bracing, support systems and anchorages for the interior steel stud framing to withstand gravity loads, seismic forces and building movement. The steel-stud walls support equipment vital to the hospital’s ability to function during an earthquake.

The company also collaborated with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades to develop building information modeling for patient headwall units. By prefabricating 240 headwall partitions, the project schedule was shortened by three weeks per floor.

Judge’s comment: “The sheer magnitude and complexity of this project draw you in. Then the beautiful design and construction win you over. This project is an excellent example of harmonizing beauty with functionality. This project will be appreciated for many years to come.”
