The ribbon was cut last week on Anacortes' new $57 million water treatment plant on River Bend Road near Mount Vernon.
Built by Imco General Construction, the project replaces an aging plant with one capable of treating 42 million gallons of water daily from the Skagit River. Imco finished six months ahead of schedule and bid about $10 million below the engineer's estimate.
The plant consists of a ballasted sedimentation pretreatment facility, multi-media filtration, operations and control center, 2.1 million-gallon steel water storage tank, pump stations, piping and a chemical facility.
Imco poured about 15,000 cubic yards of concrete on the project, which was its single largest contract. Also, the Ferndale-based contractor used mainly local labor, suppliers and subcontractors.
HDR was the design engineer and MWH served as construction manager.
Located along the Skagit River, the new treatment plant serves more than 56,000 customers in Anacortes, La Conner, Whidbey Island and two oil refineries in Skagit County.
Imco will break ground next month on a $30 million water treatment plant for the city of Lynden.
