East Bay Public Plaza
Location: Olympia
General contractor: Belarde Co.
Owner/developer: LOTT Clean Water Alliance
Primary designer: Robert W. Droll Landscape Architect
This public waterfront plaza features a plaza-length interactive stream that uses reclaimed water and pavement designs replicating Pacific Northwest shorelines.
Belarde Co. installed three prominent concrete hardscape features sedimentary cutbank wall and stream, mosaic waterlines, and waved-gradation concrete paving. Three different integral colors were layered in the cutbank wall, which required switching concrete trucks during each layered pour. Another challenge included making sure the seeps were aligned properly with the plumbing to allow for only a trickle of water.
The massive size and weight of the tiled mosaic artwork sheets some over 20 feet long required a deliberate and deft touch.
