Brightwater wastewater treatment plant
Location: Woodinville
General contractor: Kiewit Infrastructure West
Owner/developer: King County Wastewater Treatment Division
Primary designers: CH2M Hill, Brown and Caldwell
This new wastewater treatment plant treats an average of 36 million gallons per day of wastewater and can treat up to 130 million gallon per day during peak-hour flows.
The project faced multiple challenges, including a shared work site, shared commissioning with another general contractor and more than 50 subcontractors. Kiewit’s strategy was to plan early and use multiple small-work packages, which required a strong working relationship with the owner and designer.
One example of streamlined approaches developed by the team was the extensive detailing process for mechanical piping, electrical and HVAC layout. This high level of planning facilitated the successful installation of more than 66,000 linear feet of piping with minimal conflicts, and allowed commissioning teams to begin work 12 months before substantial completion.
King County gave Kiewit a final performance evaluation of “excellent” as a result of its efforts.
