Al Gonzales
Guy F. Atkinson Construction
Al Gonzales’ track record of carrying out innovative construction solutions played an essential role in the success of Atkinson’s Bellevue Braids highway project.
The biggest challenge was working in close proximity to Overlake Hospital Medical Center. Gonzales’ innovative redesign of the Northeast 10th Street ramp reduced the amount of drilling, minimized vibration and noise impacts, alleviated air-quality concerns, lessened utility relocations, and enhanced traffic circulation on the hospital campus.
Since this project was at the heart of the highest-volume interchange on the Interstate 405 corridor, a 52-hour closure of I-405 for the demolition of the old Northeast 12th Street bridge was a big challenge.
Gonzales’ public outreach effort and extensive coordination with the hospital, the city of Bellevue and other audiences helped reduce daily I-405 vehicle traffic by 75 percent, minimizing delays and congestion around the site.
