Crews to build a ‘bubble' by Bertha

SEATTLE — After digging three exploratory shafts, WSDOT didn't find anything significant jamming the front of the machine boring the SR 99 waterfront tunnel.

The agency and its contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners, now plan to build a hyperbaric “bubble” within Bertha's excavation chamber so that workers can inspect the machine more closely.
