Uptown Shopping Centre has 60 stores and was built in two phases over four years.

Location: Victoria

Contractor: Dryco Systems

Architect: Chandler Associates Architecture

Team: Bailey Metal Products; ITW Construction Products; Parker Johnston Industries; Slegg Lumber; Winroc; Armstrong World Industries Canada; CertainTeed Gypsum Canada; CGC/USG; Dryvit Systems; Georgia-Pacific Canada; Hilti; ITW-Ramset

The Uptown Shopping Centre, just north of downtown Victoria, sets itself apart from other projects with its sheer magnitude. This project was completed in two phases over four years and required 50,000 labor hours to construct the 12 buildings and parkade.

A few of the project’s challenges were: designs varied from one building to another; anchor store Walmart remained open throughout construction; and walking the 18-acre site took an entire day.

The shopping center is home to 60 retail shops, including major stores such as Future Shop, Walmart and Best Buy. Phase three has yet to get underway, but it is expected to contain residential and office buildings.

Judge’s comment: “The Uptown Shopping Centre sets itself apart from other projects on Vancouver Island with its sheer magnitude. The construction team worked together for four years on this two-phase project and should be very proud of their accomplishments.”
