Part of Broad Street closing permanently

SEATTLE — On Sunday, the Seattle Department of Transportation is permanently closing Broad Street between Fifth and Ninth avenues north to allow for construction on the Mercer Corridor and Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement projects.

The closed portion of Broad will be used to widen Mercer Street to three lanes in each direction between Interstate 5 and Fifth Avenue North. It also will allow crews to build surface street connections to the north portal of the tunnel that will replace the viaduct.
