Merit Construction Northwest recently finished a $5.5 million expansion and renovation of Columbia Presbyterian Church at 805 Columbia Ridge Drive in Vancouver.

The three-phase project created a 41,000-square-foot church with an expanded sanctuary and fellowship hall. Portions of the existing sanctuary were restored, maintaining the history of the church.

The sanctuary expansion involved installation of two 80-foot-long steel beams to replace wood support columns. The reconfigured area is more open and the number of seats has nearly doubled.

Classrooms were also improved.

The design team was led by architect BCRA and engineer PCS Structural Solutions, both of Tacoma.

Major subcontractors were Tacoma Plumbing, Tacoma; Blairco Inc. (HVAC), Vancouver; Patriot Fire Protection, Vancouver; and Prairie Electric, Vancouver.

Merit is based in Lakewood.
