Shell deposit halts Bertha’s rescue pit

Seattle Tunnel Partners Thursday night stopped excavation of Bertha’s rescue pit after WSDOT archaeologists found a deposit containing shell material that may indicate the presence of cultural materials.

WSDOT says no artifacts or human remains were found, but the deposit requires further evaluation. The agency is working with the Federal Highway Administration and tribal governments, and the Washington State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation to determine the next steps.
