TUMWATER — The state Department of Labor & Industries fined Seattle Tunnel Partners $2,050 for safety violations in connection with an incident in February that injured a subcontractor's employees.
As general contractor, STP is responsible for overall jobsite safety.
Most of the fines centered around a serious violation for not ensuring all protruding rebar was capped to prevent possible impalement. On Feb. 12, one worker was hospitalized and several others injured when the rebar wall they were working on detached from a concrete wall, causing them to fall.
The subcontractor, Central Steel, was cited in April for two safety violations related to the incident and fined $2,050. That citation is under appeal.
The investigation also found three general violations related to the STP's OSHA record keeping, each carrying a $100 fine.
STP has 15 days to appeal its fines.
