A groundbreaking event has been scheduled for 1 p.m. June 24 for Pike Place MarketFront.

The Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority is developing the $73 million complex.

The site is a parking lot at 1501 Western Ave., just south of Victor Steinbrueck Park. MarketFront will eventually connect the market with the waterfront by a structure called Overlook Walk, part of the plan to redevelop the waterfront.

MarketFront is expected to open in late 2016.

It will have 30,000 square feet of open space with a public plaza and viewing deck; 12,000 square feet of commercial and retail space; 47 tables for farmers, crafters and artists; 40 low-income apartments for seniors; 300 parking spaces; 33 bike parking spaces; and a new neighborhood center.

The PDA said Honest Biscuits, Indi Chocolate and Old Stove, and a new brewery and gastro-pub have agreed to lease space at MarketFront.

The Miller Hull Partnership is MarketFront's architect, Sellen Construction is the general contractor, and SOJ is the project manager.

The PDA said in a press release that since the early 1980s, the site has been the focus of at least seven feasibility studies and development proposals, none of which secured adequate funding.
