Sound Transit is looking for a general contractor to build a 2,150-foot light rail tunnel through downtown Bellevue.
Sound Transit issued an invitation for bids this week for site work, demolition of several structures and building the tunnel. Bids are due Oct. 6.
The tunnel's south portal will be near 112th Avenue Southeast and Main Street. The tunnel will run under 110th Avenue Northeast for about half a mile before turning east near Northeast Sixth Street.
The north portal will be at Northeast Sixth Street, near Bellevue City Hall.
HJH Final Design Partners is designing the tunnel and downtown station. The team includes Hatch Mott MacDonald, Jacobs Engineering Group and HNTB.
The contract is estimated at $130 million to $180 million.
Work would begin with construction of the south portal staging area, according to bid documents. That involves demolition of existing structures and part of Southeast First Place.
Crews will build a sound wall around the south portal area. There will be an approximately 250-foot cut-and-cover box structure at the south portal, and the tunnel will be about 1,900 feet.
A pre-bid meeting for interested firms is set for 11 a.m. Sept. 1 at 401 S. Jackson St. in Seattle.
Sound Transit spokesman Bruce Gray said the goal is to have a contract for the Sound Transit Board of Directors to vote on in November. If all goes well, construction on the tunnel could begin next spring with completion expected in spring 2020.
East Link is expected to open in 2023.
