South Puget Sound Community College last month moved its Hawks Prairie Center satellite campus to a newly remodeled 1979 office building at 4220 Sixth Ave. S.E., across from Lacey Transit Center.

In addition to general classes, the college is offering corporate and continuing education classes at the Lacey location. The Thurston County Economic Development Council also moved into the space, along with the South Puget Sound Business Resource Center, which is a new partnership between the college and the council.

The building has a business library, testing center, computer labs, three 100-seat classrooms that can be reconfigured into a 300-seat event center, eight conference rooms, offices and additional classrooms.

The project was the first design-build contract administered by the state Department of Enterprise Services. Korsmo Construction and KMB Design Groups led the design-build team. The construction budget was $8 million.

Major improvements to the 52,000-square-foot building included mechanical, electrical and HVAC upgrades, as well as a new exterior envelope and replacement of the original mansard roof.

The building was remodeled using environmentally conscious principles, with energy-efficient lighting, increased natural lighting from skylights, reused concrete floors, native plant landscaping and an energy-efficient HVAC system.

The Olympia-based college also operates its Advanced Manufacturing Program in another building on the Lacey campus.
