Owners of the Space Needle want to sink more than $50 million into a renovation of the iconic structure.
On Friday CEO Ron Sevart unveiled long-term plans that would make top-to-bottom improvements to the Needle, including removing the “cage” on the observation deck.
Olson Kundig is the architect.
Here are the five major projects:
• A new elevator system that could include double-deck cabs
• Replacing the metal security cage with a glass wall
• Replacing the mechanism that rotates the restaurant, and adding a glass floor that will reveal the workings of the new system
• New floor-to-ceiling windows for the observation deck and restaurant
• Wider observation deck doors and an accessibility lift
Sevart said the project is still at an early stage and must be approved by the architectural review committee of Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board. He said that process would take months.
