The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Friday put a new water distribution system into service at McNary Lock and Dam east of Umatilla, Oregon.
Rotschy Inc. of Vancouver built the plant under a $3.16 million contract. It supplies water to the dam's powerhouse, warehouse and west park areas.
The new system has a rectangular 22-foot-tall concrete water tank that was half buried and partially covered on three sides by an earthen berm to give it a lower profile, improving the view for nearby homeowners.
Crews this week are demolishing the old round water tank on the shoreline of the Columbia River. The tank was used for more than 50 years and was deteriorating. It no longer met the dam's fire-protection water supply, irrigation water system and other operational requirements.
Rotschy started work in January.
